"This fourth volume of the series I Quaderni di Sanguis Jovis "The terroir of Sangiovese in Tuscany" assembles the contributions of the third Summer School which took place in 2019 in Montalcino. The topic on which this session reflected was Sangiovese and the varieties of expression in the different terroir where it grows. The heart of the volume is represented by three contributions:

  • Edoardo Costantini investigates geology and pedology of the terroirs of Sangiovese in Tuscany;
  • Luigi Mariani introduces topics regarding meteorology and its impact on the vineyard;
  • Giovan Battista Mattii and Paolo Storchi highlight the relation between plant and soil features.

These three contributions were made possible thanks to several partner estates of the Sanguis Jovis project which volunteered as open-air research labs. The volume is completed by the synthetic notes on these partners to whom we express our gratitude. In this journal, we are also hosting the thesis of the winner of the Rudy Buratti Award, a recognition of accomplishment for our young generation, established in memory of the enologist of Banfi. I hope you enjoy reading this volume.
